Obituary: Lula Grace Durgin Bennington, NH: Lula Grace Durgin, 89, of Durgin
Road, passed away following a period of declining health Monday, June 25, 2007,
at her home surrounded by her family. Lula was born on August 1, 1917, in
Plymouth, NH, the daughter of the late Raymond and Goldie (Flint) Boutwell. She
was raised in Newport and attended the local schools. She married John D. Durgin
and raised 9 children. They shared 49 years together until his passing in 1987.
Lula was a homemaker and business partner with John in logging under the name of
JD Durgin & Sons. She was a longtime resident of Newport until moving to
Bennington in 1969. Her interests included sewing, knitting, quilting and
participating in Draft Horse Pulls with her husband. She was a member of the
Eastern Draft Horse Association and the Southern Draft Horse Association. Her
favorite place was the John Durgin Arena at the Hopkinton Fair. Also among her
favorites were chicken fingers and her faithful companion, her dog Cricket.
Survivors include 6 sons: Arthur Durgin and his wife Sue of Newport, Raymond
Durgin and his wife Nancy of NC, Roland Durgin and his wife Christine of Goshen,
Kenneth Durgin and his wife Susan of Walpole, Bruce Durgin and his wife Ruthanne
of Deerfield, and Jeffrie Durgin and his wife Maureen of Bennington; 2
daughters: Beatrice Mountain and her husband Arthur of Newport and Joyce
Desaulniers and her husband David of Bennington; one brother Jeffrie Boutwell
and his wife Charlotte of Dublin; 3 sisters: Sheila Spaulding and Madeline Davis
both of Newport, and Joyce Collins of Georges Mills; 24 Grandchildren and 33
Great-Grandchildren. In addition to her husband John, her son Ronald Durgin in
1996, her brother John Francis Boutwell, and sisters Maxine Hurd and Doris
Bannister, predeceased Lula. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, June
29, 2007 at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street Newport followed by
a committal service at Pine Grove Cemetery, Newport. Pastor Donna Leslie is
officiating. Relatives and Friends may call on the family on Thursday, June 28,
2007 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home. Memorial
