Chester, NH

Raymond M. Smart Sr., 83, of Raymond Rd., died on October 2, 2007, at the VA Hospital in Manchester, NH.
He was born on December 28, 1925 in Manchester, NH, the son of the late Edgar and Eleanor (Stackhouse) Smart.
Raymond grew up in Derry, NH and was a longtime resident of Chester. He served in the US Army military police during WW II and was a purple heart recipient.

A self employed logger for most of his life, Raymond’s true passion in life was for horse pulling. He began horse pulling at the Deerfield Fair in 1946. He and his late wife were co-founders of the horse pulling events at the Raymond Town Fair. He served as Assistant Superintendent for the Deerfield Fair Association, the Hopkinton Fair Association and Superintendent for the Topsfield Fair Association Horse Pulling. He was a judge for horse pulling events held at the Stratham Fair and on Martha’s Vineyard. He was also a longtime member of the Eastern Ontario Horse Pulling Association in Kemptville, Ontario, and the Eastern Draft Horse Association.

He was a life member of the Raymond Sportsman Club, the American Legion Post 200 in Concord, NH, and the VFW Maplewheadon Post 4479 of Raymond, NH.

He is survived by 2 sons, Raymond Smart Jr. of Exeter, NH; Willis “Skip” (and his wife Mary) Smart of Raymond, NH; 1 daughter Donna Smart of Exeter, NH; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

IN HIS LIFE : He was predeceased by his first wife Shirley E. Smart in 1949, and his wife of 56 years, Mary E. Smart who died March 27, 2007. He was also predeceased by a daughter Sandra Smart; 3 brothers, Edgar Smart, Ralph Smart, and William Brown; a sister Maxine Brown; and a granddaughter Tabetha Smart.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2007 from 6-9 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 2 Epping St., On the Common, Raymond, NH. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, October 5, at 12 PM, at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Raymond, NH. Rev. Chandler Newton will officiate the service.
